Like A Pomegranate

Zen-cuisine is a process of practice and realization, grounded in deepening our insight into the true nature of our humanity. At the very core of our existence is the freedom to live fully in each moment. As we prepare food in a mindful and open-hearted way, we touch the basic energy of living. This energy flow interpenetrates our world. In preparing and sharing food, we nourish ourselves in the knowledge that this simple, yet vital act connects us with one another in an intimate way. We see a paradox in life, like the pomegranate fruit. Each of us appears as if we are a single jewel-like seed, yet we are also part of the fruit; we are the pomegranate.  And the taste of this fruit is the oneness of reality, the flavour of our true essence.

In the same way the seeds inside the fruit are all one pomegranate, we share a common humanity. We can explore our own experience, and come to realize that peace lies in accepting what is happening in the kitchen. We find happiness in embracing our interconnectedness with all that is. As we open to the inherent wisdom and clarity of practicing zen-cuisine, we stay fully present in each moment.
We breathe, and remember our intention to create wholesome and life-sustaining food in a loving and joyful atmosphere. There is a sense of gratitude for the many opportunities life offers. We become aware of circumstances in which we can be of benefit to ourself, to one another , and the planet through mindful and appropriate actions in the grocery store, and in our kitchen.

Pausing to feel grateful for the abundance in our daily living, we find happiness in simple things: hearing the soft sound of the pomegranate skin being pulled apart; taking the spoon from the drawer to scoop out the seeds, smelling the sweet-tart scent of the fruit. We discover a new joy in sharing a plate of juicy and crunchy pomegranate seeds with someone else. We delight in being present with one another, not particularly saying much, but relaxing into the comfortable intimacy of good company. This truly is a tender and loving manifestation of zen-cuisine practice. Happy Cooking!
