Zen-cuisine is a continuum we can experience in many different ways. Through its practice, we open to the rich and vast possibilities cooking offers us. Participating in the continuum teaches us that mindfully preparing food is not only a unique and extraordinary experience, but also is a familiar, intimate and simple act. We learn that sometimes cooking makes us feel blissfully part of the abundance of life, connected to the totality of all that is. At other times, cooking centers us in a calm and gentle awareness as a watcher of what arises in the present moment.
In the kitchen, we look at the mushrooms on the counter awaiting our attention. We sense the creative, nourishing energy that manifests in their earthy colour, delicate fragrance, smooth-textured skin and tender flesh. Picking up a fresh mushroom and looking at it in appreciation, we take a moment to bring to mind the many hands and circumstances that brought it to our table. Skillfully, we pay attention to the quality of our breath, we move into the 'flow' of preparing the mushroom dish. Our touch is confident and full of care.
Practicing zen-cuisine, we learn to honour the food we prepare, and to acknowledge the love that inspires our cooking. We flow into the continuum of zen-cuisine, experiencing the power of the present moment. This brings to mind our intention to create flavourful, wholesome and nutritious food for those we love.Stepping out of our ordinary mind, we enter the spaciousness of our own thought-free awareness.
As our expanded awareness opens us to the utter goodness of life, we delight in the process of nurturing well-being. Grateful for an opportunity to share our joy, we relax into trusting the perfection of this present moment. A deeper reality unfolds around us. The self joyfully witnessing its own existence as part of all that is. This is the bliss of zen-cuisine. Happy cooking!
